Look for the Steiff button in the left ear and the ear tag held by it. Steiff created the button in 1904 to set its own toys apart from cheaper imitations, and it still marks genuine Steiff toys today.
What to look for
The button in the ear: a metal button in the left ear. Franz Steiff designed it in 1904, and it was registered as a trademark in 1905.
The ear tag: a small cloth tag held by the button. On current Steiff teddies its colour tells what kind of piece it is: white with red lettering for limited editions, white with blue lettering for open editions and white with black lettering for replicas.
The certificate: every Steiff limited edition comes with its own numbered certificate.
Older teddies
On older teddies the button and tag have often been lost over the years, and a button alone should not be taken as proof. Then the teddy's materials, construction and history tell more: see How can I tell how old a vintage Steiff is?
